Learn about health card requirements for pharmacy services.

Do I Need a Health Card?

For most services, yes - you'll need to bring your provincial health card.

Your health card is used to:

  • Verify your eligibility for provincially-funded services
  • Bill services to the provincial health plan
  • Create or update your pharmacy records

What to Bring

Please bring to your appointment:

  • Provincial health card (OHIP, BCID, etc.)
  • Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, passport)

Both are typically required to confirm your identity.

Which Health Cards Are Accepted?

Accepted cards include:

  • Ontario - OHIP card
  • British Columbia - BC Services Card
  • Alberta - Alberta Health Care Card
  • Quebec - RAMQ card
  • Other provincial health cards

What If I Don't Have a Health Card?

If you don't have a health card:

  • Some services may still be available for a fee
  • Bring photo ID to confirm your identity
  • Contact the pharmacy before your appointment to discuss options

Expired Health Card?

If your health card is expired:

  • You may still receive service (varies by pharmacy)
  • Update your card as soon as possible
  • Bring additional ID as backup

New to the Province?

If you've recently moved to Ontario or another province:

  1. Apply for your new provincial health card
  2. There may be a waiting period for coverage
  3. Contact the pharmacy about service options during this time

International Visitors

If you don't have a Canadian health card:

  • Services may be available for a fee
  • Bring your passport and travel insurance
  • Contact the pharmacy to confirm availability and costs
